THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX: INNOVATIVE APPROACHES

Research and development is the second core field of our activities besides training.

 

As we are in permanent exchange with many firms of the shoe and leather sector, ISC has become a hub where project ideas can rapidly be transformed into concrete proposals.

 

We initiate and act as partners in publicly funded research projects, primarily aiming to strengthen the competitive edge of SMEs of the shoe and leather industry. Beyond, we carry out contract research and provide engineering support in technical developments.

1. Core area: Optimizing Patterns and Processes

The technical aspects of shoe production are of great importance. We aim to develop methods and processes further and enhance them. A major focus of research activity at ISC Germany is described by the keyword «interdisciplinary technology transfer», which is concerned with the systematic search for, and testing of, techniques used in other sectors of industry to establish their suitability for use in footwear production.
 

Furthermore particular attention is devoted to the optimization of patterns and processes and the use of raw materials and energy in an environmentally responsible and efficient manner.

 

Key Asset for our R&D activities is – besides the vast expertise of our staff – is our state-of-the art training factory, occupying a floor space of 1,800 m². This highly modern production line allows us to produce all makes and even dispose of a direct injection machine. Actually, this production line is ISC's nucleus: This is where we produce samples and pilot runs, work on developments, and test innovative production techniques to establish their suitability for use in footwear production.

 

In addition to pubicly funded research we carry out contract research for customers and provide engineering support in technical developments. Examples range from finding a technical solution for an innovative shoe closure system to foot measuring systems, to verifyng new insole concepts, or  to the development of a modular system for orthotics for shoes for diabetics, or to measures to make the shoe production process more sustainable.

2. Core Area: Optimizing Fit / Wear Comfort / Biomechanical Properties

 

 

Furthermore particular attention is devoted to open questions of improving wear comfort and the fit of shoes. Here the focus is on biomechanics and orthopaedics. The fact that we have our own in-house biomechanical laboratory allows us to verify new concepts in this area.

3. Core Area: Research for Training and Further Education

Occupational profiles need to evolve according to the requirements of the modern industrial production environment and the markets.

 

ISC is currently involved in two EU-funded projects related to occupational training and further education.
